The Recasting Couch Ep. 51: The 40 Year Old Virgin

40 Year Old Virgin

The 40 Year Old Virgin. This episode has it all. Steve Carell’s breakout role that may have shaped the trajectory of his Michael Scott character, forever altering the landscape of modern television comedy. We also have attempted murder. We share the more embarrassing family story outside of The Muskrat Incident. Needless to say this is a must-listen.

Usually we hesitate to recast comedies because of how they are usually revolving around such a singular character/performance (think Billy Madison or Ace Ventura). This was one of those comedies that felt like it could take place just about anywhere and with anyone. I think that really adds to the charm and may have been why it was so popular at the time.

However, the only way that you can really get away with a comedy that revolves around a boring every-man is to surround him with big personalities, and that’s what this movie really brings. Ya mo be there for Paul Rudd who is hilarious in his follow up from his first real comedy breakout role as Brian Fantana in Anchorman. Romany Malco totally crushes as Andy’s friend Jay, who we wish would be in way more comedies. He works like hell in the TV circuit, but he needs an opportunity to spread his comedic wings. Seth Rogen in his real break out movie role who seemed to solidify his partnership with Judd Apatow.

Also Appearing:

Jane Lynch

Mindy Kaling

Jonah Hill

Kat Dennings

And several more…

It really is amazing how many stars were in this movie early in their careers. Go to the IMDB page and use 20/20 hindsight to realize just how stacked with comedy this movie is. While your fingers are doing the walking (old person reference alert), make your way over to iTunes and leave us a 5 star rating. It helps people discover the pod and also makes us feel good.
