Welcome to The Recasting Couch ‘After Dark’. Mike and I get a little sauced up and have more fun talking about horrible stuff than we probably should. This week we recast Outbreak, the 1995 doomsday thriller starring Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, and Morgan Freeman.
Now, I had never seen this movie before, but I distinctly remember it being a movie that scared the absolute pants off of people. Especially the “Movie Theater Scene”. Honestly, it was way overblown. I don’t know if it was just a situation where the effects were so new that it added a level of detail that hadn’t been seen before, but I was thoroughly unimpressed. That being said, the movie was really fun to watch. It was more along the lines of a straight-forward action/thriller movie than I was expecting. I was thinking it was more of a world-wide catastrophe sort of film.
This does not, however, negate the fantastic performances by pretty much everyone involved. In addition to the actors I’ve already mentioned, you have great performances by Cuba Gooding, Jr. as the young, morally untainted soldier, Donald Sutherland as the eventual villain, and Kevin Spacey in one of his most low-key, yet enjoyable, scene stealing characters.
We were able to keep this one under 2 hours, which we are pretty happy about and can hopefully start delivering more consistently as we get better at this. Thanks for listening to the show! If you like what you hear, leave us a 5-star review on iTunes (or 4-star, I won’t be pushy about it).
