On this week’s episode, we recast the 2000 Nicolas Cage vehicle*, Gone in 60 Seconds. This was another quick recast where we watch a movie and then immediately sit down and talk about it. This is a pure popcorn movie, and one that we’ve each seen at least a dozen times. There are a few big time stars in this movie (Angelina Jolie, Robert Duvall, Giovanni Ribisi) but it’s mostly an ensemble featuring a ton of that-guys and C level stars who do a great job creating some fun and memorable characters (Scott Caan, Will Patton, Delroy Lindo, Timothy Olyphant, Chi McBride). That made the recast super-fun and allowed us to go into some interesting directions with our picks.
While we are, of course, focused on the acting in this movie, we realize that this movie is simply car porn for, what I’m sure is a large overlap of people who love action movies and nice cars. Neither Mike nor I are terribly interested in cars ourselves, but in this movie you can’t help but appreciate the objective beauty of some of these machines.
This movie had all of the elements to be an all time great action movie, but the writing really fell flat at times. Also, the soundtrack could have been better. Even though we liked the cast overall, there were probably 3 too many characters involved. You could have cut them out and the running time could have been cut down to about 1:45 as opposed to it ending up about 10 minutes passed the two hour mark. These sound like major issues, but I don’t think there was anything in particular that was bad. There were just a few things that could have been good instead of mediocre and it would have raised the overall score of the movie in my opinion.Despite all of this, it’s certainly worth another watch, and I hope you enjoy this pod.
