Ep. 12: Little Shop of Horrors

Little Shop

This week we decided to celebrate the solar eclipse by recasting the 1986 musical Little Shop of Horrors. Starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Levi Stubbs, and Steve Martin, this Frank Oz directed film holds up surprisingly well. The way this movie is filmed maintains a lot of the broadway aesthetic and that creates a self-contained universe reminiscent of life on Skid Row during what feels like the 1950’s or so.

The music also lends itself to that same time, in that most of it is 50’s style doo-wop. Rick Moranis had not really been known as a musician and did a surprisingly great job holding his own next to Broadway behemoths and the lead singer of the Four Tops.

The special effects are all practical and really impressive. I’m sure Frank Oz had a small army of puppeteers working on it, and the results speak for themselves. It’s absolutely brilliant.

Now those of you who have never seen this movie may be asking yourself what does this have at all to do with the eclipse? Well, the plant that is the subject of the show was discovered by our protagonist when it seemed to appear out of thin air during a total eclipse of the sun. Of course we eventually learn that the plant is actually a being from outer space. So, when you are taking in the solar eclipse, be sure to keep an eye out for any strange and unusual plants that materialize during the eclipse. It could make you rich and successful, granted you survive the whole ordeal, which is unlikely.

So I know that I should be happy that you liked 2 out of 3 of my picks, but I think Matt Damon would be able to play a quirky Seymour perfectly. Plus with Renee Zellwegger as Audrey, they would look great together!
